ASwiftRead supports local reading and optional OpenAI features. This page describes the current native builds.

Stored on your device

Your imported text, library, bookmarks, reading positions, preferences, character voice assignments, and generated narration cache are stored locally. They do not automatically sync between devices. Apple API keys use Keychain; Android keys are encrypted with Android Keystore. A key is not embedded in the app installer.

Optional OpenAI narration

When you choose My OpenAI key, passages are sent to OpenAI to generate audio. Character voices also send the passage and nearby preceding text for speaker analysis. The app requests that speaker-analysis responses are not stored, but this does not override OpenAI’s service retention policies. Your personal OpenAI account is billed for requests, including up to two upcoming sections prepared in advance.

Conversational controls

Using the OpenAI assistant sends your command text, relevant conversation history, and reader control state to OpenAI. The assistant command request does not include the book text; narration and character analysis send text separately as described above. Microphone input requires permission. Android uses available on-device speech recognition; Apple speech recognition depends on system and language availability. Voice control and spoken replies can be disabled in Settings.

Local reading and choices

Local reading and installed device voices can be used without an OpenAI key. Avoid the optional OpenAI features to keep document text out of those requests. Remove a saved API key in Settings, or delete a document from your library to remove it and its generated narration. Uninstalling may leave credentials in Apple Keychain; remove your key in Settings first if you want it removed.

Purchases and support

Where Apple reading credits are enabled, Apple processes purchases and the reading service verifies transactions and processes narration requests. Android does not currently offer reading-credit purchases. If you email support, your email address and the information you choose to provide are used to answer your request. Never send your API key.

Data use

ASwiftRead does not sell personal information or use your document text for advertising. Network requests use HTTPS. OpenAI’s handling of requests is subject to its service policies and your account settings.
